Public buildings, such as the State Library, the University of Melbourne and the Treasury buildings, were erected in the 1850s and an influx of settlers from far and wide set the scene for a booming city. At Anderson’s Creek, near Warrandyte, gold was discovered in 1851 although it was low-key compared with the massive rushes to the hinterland where gold was found in abundance. Settlement of the eastern area of Melbourne was slower the farther one travelled from the city centre. As the number of Europeans grew, the number of Aborigines declined.
