Synopsis
A handshake with a fellow passenger while on an overland tour to northern Australia led us to a mystery
property in France.

We had offered to restore two gîtes, the grounds and a swimming pool in exchange for free accommodation and time to travel. With effort, imagination, and a generous float, we were confident of making the business profitable again.

The property was love at first sight. Pinching ourselves, we fell into a dreamless sleep. Two days later, our rose-coloured glasses had gone as we realized the extent of what we had committed to. Restoring holiday
accommodation for eleven guests on a rundown seven-hectare rural property.

There was a tight deadline before guests were due to arrive, and real estate agents would bring prospective purchasers.

Would there be time to immerse ourselves in French rural life and explore and travel in Europe?

The following year we returned with less responsibility. Travel, friends and property hunting kept us occupied. Two groups of friends were booked to stay in September and October.

However, unforeseen events made life very uncomfortable, and the second year climaxed in a showdown.

Could we say ‘au revoir’ to new friends and community, a cultural life we had discovered with medieval festivals, night markets, vide-greniers and concerts?

Title : France on a Handshake
Review : How many of us would have the courage to leave home and hearth, set off to a foreign country and take on the management of a holiday B&B? Not many I suspect. But Allan and Christina Pemberton did just that on the back of a chance meeting, a conversation and a handshake. They were to be responsible for weekend changeovers, but it did not always go as it should have done. However all problems and mishaps were dealt with in a positive way and always with guest’s best interests in mind. There was plenty of time to explore this beautiful part of “Forgotten France” as it is known, try the wonderful food, seek out the many picturesque old villages and enjoy the local entertainment. All in all an amazing experience that will tempt the reader to go out and buy a ticket to France tomorrow.

Review : What a great adventure & all on a handshake...carpe diem indeed. It literally was a hands on experience with many challenges but together Christina and Allan managed all. This memoire is a testament to their relationship of love, support and mateship. the hard work had it's rewards though-time out to enjoy the rhythm of life & culture in the beautiful Aveyron region. The best reward of all came when they found their own petite maison in Najac to share with friends & family. Looking forward to a visit to Najac in Book Two. I really enjoyed your book Christina.

Review : I felt I was living there with Christina and Allan. Every sentence was a story. I could picture the work they did, the food they ate, the old house and the Gites, all the rooms became familiar. I loved the whole story.
