Description
A German Saxon Sampler

This splendid early German sampler was probably made in Saxony, and features a very stylized rendition of Adam and Eve, quite similar to those depicted on other early German samplers, including one other reproduced by The Scarlet Letter,

On the left side of the sampler, numerous pattern bands are precisely worked, as an exercise before using similar patterns to decorate ribbons, towels, cuffs, pillow vases, and other household textiles. The original sampler was stitched reversibly in regular cross stitch. Popular symbols depict the Lamb of God, Moses receiving the Ten Commandments on a tablet from an angel, wreaths encircling initials, and a curious little owl, perched on a leafy plant beside Adam, under the Tree of Life.

The original sampler retains its very well-preserved color on both sides. Stitches used are cross and double running (back stitch).

The reproduction sampler stitched on 35 count linen will measure 15 3/4" x 16"

The project is recommended for any skill level.
