Description
John Hartley

A comprehensive guide to one of the Manchester Pals battalions, formed as part of Kitchener’s New Army on the outbreak of war. The 17th (Service) Battalion (2nd City Pals) was formed in late August 1914, initially from the clerks and warehousemen of the city’s major employers. After training at Heaton Park and Lark Hill on Salisbury Plain it was then sent overseas in November 1915. The men saw action at the Somme, Arras and Ypres, including the German spring offensive of 1918, which saw the Battalion all but destroyed.

Extensive research has enabled mini-biographies to be written about nearly 1000 men who formed the original Pals.

This is a record of their achievements and their losses.

About the author
John was born in North Cheshire and still lives in the area. He worked for a number of years for Manchester City Council before joining the Probation Service in an administrative capacity. He is now retired.

Like many people, John’s interest in the Great War was sparked by discovering about his grandfather - who had served with the 17th Battalion.
